This paper presents improving the real-time fault monitoring in 330KV power transmission network using wide area monitoring technique. First, technical investigation was conducted on the Nigeria 32bus, 330KV transmission network Supervisory Data Acquisition and Control (SCADA) System using Newton Raphson load flow analysis to study unstable bus. The result showed that due to the technical deficiency of the major SCADA components like the Remote Telemetry Unit (RTU), the data lacks integrity as not all unstable bus were identified at the time of fault. The author usedPhase Measurement Unit (PMU) which was strategically deployed according to a rule-based optimization algorithm technique which then improves the SCADA monitoring performance. The simulation result of the PMU based SCADA showed that the bus data on the network was determined by the PMU in real time. The PMU was then integrated for the monitoring of the 32Bus, 330KV interconnected transmission network and then result showed that 11 bus were identified as unstable, as against 7 with the RTU based SCADA. The percentage improvement in the monitoring efficiency with the PMU based SCADA is 36.36%.
